"Cozy." He said as he took in the... dark.

And the occasional, distant, silhouette of a behemoth structure on the horizon.

As far as the league knew, this was his first time in Megalopolis.

That wasn't entirely accurate, however.

"Huh. Looks about the same as last time." He commented idly, before kicking a pebble of concrete on the floor. "Only... even shittier."

He turned over to Yuina, reaching over to palm her back spiritedly.

"Look alive, Cadet!" He said, grinning. "We've got our objectives, and we've got our expert."

He winked.

"So first things first— let's make camp." He said, the weight of their equipment still on their backs. "Lead the way, love."

"Well, I've kinda been here. Once." He said, throwing a smile at his partner.

Not that she could see it.

"It was a... dream? Alternate universe? Something like that." He said, before waving his hand dismissively. "I'm not even sure if it was here, specifically. Just looked a lot like it."

And he was wearing Megalopolan Military Regalia, too. Best not to think too hard about it.

"So..." He pointed at her. "Has actually traveled through the city. Expert." Then at himself. "Thinks he might've dreamed about it. Possibly delusional."

What a reasonable way to dump a whole lot of responsibility on her. Ah well, the cute cadet would surely pull through! He had faith in her!

A flash. A shatter. And a shudder that rolled over the entire city as something within it came alive.

Doug's skin crawled.

"No complaints from me. Let's skedaddle." Turning to guard Yuina's back as she released her Salamence.

He rode behind her without complaint— locking his arms around her waist just to make sure he didn't fell.

"Phew. A salamence? Yer a full blown pro ranger now, huh?" He said, grinning.

Maybe if she showed off her Salamence to freya morningstar, the councilwoman would chill about her. Surely a girl this cute and trusted by a dragon couldn't possibly be trouble.

Surely.

As they reached the top of the skyscraper, Doug leapt off the Salamence— and unceremoniously ate shit, tripping on a brick as he landed in the dark.

"Son of a concrete who—, _{Damn IT}!" He cussed and grumbled while holding his ankle— before something snapped and clicked audibly in his bones. "There it goes."

Avatars just cheated at life, seriously.

Rising back to his feet, Doug squinted into the dark, before raising his hand, summoning glowing magenta scales to just barely illuminate the rooftop they found themselves in.

"There's a door over there." He said, gesturing. "Should we go in? Feels like we'll get blown right off the roof if we linger."

Wind speeds at Skyscraper altitudes were unsurprisingly intense.

"Salamences are very vicious pokemon, silly. They're not recommended for beginner trainers." He explained to her prior to their landing. "Usually, anyway. Been a while since I read freya morningstar's book."

He preferred entomology to dragonology.

Perhaps the karmic backlash of stereotyping the entire Salamence species had been what tripped him. Lyune's spirit itself had tripped him.

"I refuse to answer that question." He grunted, patting off dirt and dust off his top.

But if someone must know— he been prone to little slips long before meeting Lele.

But it had certainly not gotten any better after.

"They're... zombies or something, yeah? I doubt we'll find all that many up here." He said with perhaps far too much confidence, palming a pokeball.

A moment later, a familiar worm popped out.

Yuina would know it— She had witnessed Doug go cray cray over it not too long ago.

"Alrighty, Goro— helps us out ere! Dig through the concrete!" He ordered, his Orthworm snapping to attention like a soldier before promptly beginning to dig through the rooftop, opening up a rather precise looking hole.

Because Doug wasn't even going to pretend he could fix an elevator.

"Careful, okay?" He said as he glanced back to Yuina, nodding at her before holding his hand over the hole, letting a number of glowing scales drift down to illuminate the area below.

Ft. Yuina Higashi

"Ominous." He said blandly as he landed onto the room below in a spiderman crouch, the air displaced blowing against his lady's ankles.

Earlier it had sounded like she was telling him a horror story. Only the bestest places could turn factual reports into horror pieces, clearly.

He did not wield any weapons as he rose to his feet, his hand reaching out to pet his Orthworm as it did wheelies around Yuina's leg, just as happy to see her as she was him.

His eyes traveled around the room slowly.

As one might've expected from a room in a tall ass building directly below the rooftop, it looked important.

There was a big desk on one end, facing away from long, tall window panes.

Minimalist furniture decorated the office of a clearly important person.

But there was nobody there. No one like the teacher Yuina described, at any rate.

It didn't surprise him— the rich and powerful had surely made it out of the hell hole the city had become.

"I really don't know what scientists expect to find in this place." He muttered, shaking his head as he looked around, scratching at his cheek before shrugging his shoulders.

"Should we make camp here?" He suggested, a teasing smile on his lip as he marched to one of the boxy couches around and dropped onto it. "Certainly could do worse."

They needed to still vet the whole place before committing, but... with teleport, it wouldn't be too difficult to get back here, should they ever need it.

Ft. Yuina Higashi

"Whaaat?" He intoned innocently, batting his eyelashes at her.

Not that it could be seen in the bloody dark. "I'm just saying. It is conveniently placed, right?"

Not nearly enough, as it turned out.

The very air around them shifted. An unnatural pull nearly dragged Doug off the couch he had claimed.

He was back on his feet in a heartbeat, moving closer to Yuina as his Orthworm wrapped around them.

His gaze narrowed at the dark, getting used to the pitch black. His hand raised, digit pointed forth in a finger gun.

He shoots brightly lit scale towards the other end of the office. It's radius of illumination cut through the dark as it advanced.

Revealing the coiling, slithering wiring dragging along the floors, advancing towards them. Sharp crackles of lightning travel freely through the wiring as the entity controlling them realized it had been discovered.

Doug didn't see the main body, but instinct and memory worked all the same. He moved to stand in front of Yuina, snarling.

"Xurkitree."

They were both ill equipped to fight that one. His hand moved south to grab another net ball.

"Should've brought Garo out 'fore jumping in."

His hand tightens around hers, nodding.

"Let's jet." It was a bit disappointing that they hadn't managed to establish a proper base, but they had a better idea of what was going on now.

Next time would go better.

With a pop, Doug's Orbeetle came out of its ball, its eyes glowing blue in the darkness as its senses detected the danger ahead.

"Not here for a fight, Garo." Doug intoned, the z-crystal embedded into his dogtags glimmering brightly. "Just a stylish exit! Get us outta here!"

It happened in an instant; Yuina and Doug and Daikenki and Higumei and his Orthworm— they all seemed to disappear from sight, the Orbeetle rising in the air before launching out of the structure, phasing through the walls as it beelined it for the exit portal.

The mission was over. For now.
